River Birch

(Betula nigra)

At every formal gala, there are many beauties but one always stands out; it is the same among trees. The tall “drink of water” in an Emerald City-green gown gets attention, and if she has nice legs, your glance lingers. So it is with river birch—that first glimpse can start a lasting love affair. In this case, it is the “legs,” the tree trunks that are so enticing, especially because they are usually seen in multiples that further increase the attraction. But single trunked or in classic triples, river birch bark puts on a show all year with bark that peels, curls, and colors like few can do. Every shade from white through gray and cinnamon are grandly revealed in curiously charming, wide curls. Slipping out from under the leafy canopy of small, puckered leaves with toothy edges or revealed in all their winter glory, river birch bark is unforgettable long after that first glance. The trees can be as tall as 60 feet eventually, but begin their show much sooner, at about 10 feet, and only get grander year by year. They are covered in draping swaths of leaves that rustle in the breeze until autumn turns them yellow and casts them aside.
